PostgreSQL upgraded from 8.1 to 8.3

Posted on Friday 17 October 2008, at 22:46 UTC

Hi,

Due to a user request to use tsearch2, we upgraded PostgreSQL from 8.1 to 8.3 without any other consideration ;) It should have taken a few minutes but of course it would have been too easy, so we fought against bugs and finally spent several hours on it.

There are many changes between these two versions, please read the PostgreSQL release notes ;)

Beside other things, the charset used internally is now based on the system locale, we had some legacy databases from PostreSQL 7.x without any charset set and legacy databases from 8.1 with wrong charset information (database set as LATIN1 with UTF8 characters inside), we converted roughly everything to UTF8. There might be charset glitch, please fix your databases ;-)

If anything else than charset issue is not working as it should, please contact us.

Power outage

Posted on Sunday 5 October 2008, at 09:00 UTC

Hi folks,

Today, at 12:30 pm, we lost contact with our main servers. We are quite sure that it is due to another power outage in our rack. We have contacted our hoster and we are now waiting for updates. Stay tuned ;)

As usual, secondary services are up and running so don't worry for your emails.

Your admins.

Edit: OK, everything should be online again (if not, contact us). However, the problem is not fixed, the ground fault circuit interrupter (also known as differential circuit breaker) de-energized the rack on August 21st, 2008, it did it again yesterday, it will do it further for sure. This is not a load (overcurrent) problem, there is either a problem in one of our equipment (a ground fault in a power supply or such) or a problem in the circuit breaker (sensitivity higher than before).
